Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) tracked about 15,000 people for 25 years and found something major: not drinking enough water could mess with your heart health!
When you’re dehydrated, your blood gets more concentrated with sodium (salt). The study showed that higher sodium levels = higher chance of heart problems later in life. The numbers are wild: people with higher sodium levels were up to TWICE as likely to develop serious heart issues
The reality check:
Heart failure affects 6.2 million Americans—that’s about 1 in 50 people. Most people aren’t drinking enough water daily.
A healthy heart habit:
Women should drink 6-8 cups (1.5-2.1L) daily.
Men should drink 8-12 cups (2-3L) daily.
Bottom line: Staying hydrated isn’t just about clear skin and feeling good—it can literally help keep your heart healthy for the long run. So, keep a bottle of water with you and make sure to sip throughout the day!
The NIH research was published in 2022 and needs more confirmation, but the message is clear: hydrate for a healthy heart!
