Bottled water industry leader to receive prestigious
lifetime achievement award

Alexandria, VA – International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) President and CEO Joe Doss will receive the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at its annual event next month.

Mr. Doss has led IBWA since 1999, serving an industry that now produces the No.1 packaged beverage in America. IBWA advocates on behalf of its hundreds of members by providing science, technical, and research information, addressing environmental responsibility issues, and engaging in government relations and communications activities.

“I am very honored and delighted to receive this award,” said Mr. Doss. “However, any success that I have achieved is the result of the IBWA team – staff, members and consultants – working together to advance the industry and provide consumers with safe, healthy, and convenient bottled water products.”

Mr. Doss will receive his award at the annual seminar and water tasting event, held from February 21 – 24, 2019 in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. He is also a featured speaker at the educational session and will discuss the bottled water industry’s important role in providing aid during and after natural disasters and other emergencies, when tap water is often unavailable or has been compromised.

Mr. Doss has extensive experience in association management, food and drug matters, government affairs, public relations, and legal issues. He has a proven track record of strategic thinking and planning, managing complex and controversial issues, and building consensus among diverse (e.g., large and small) member companies.

“Joe has been one of the most important members of the bottled water industry in its history. He has led this industry with dignity, kindness, knowledge and fervor,” said Henry R. Hidell, III, of Hidell International (a member of the IBWA Executive Committee and a former recipient of the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Lifetime Achievement Award).

Prior to joining IBWA, Mr. Doss was senior vice president and director of public affairs at the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, and before that he served as counsel at Covington & Burling, one of the nation’s leading law firms. Earlier in his career, Mr. Doss served in various legal and legislative positions at the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, where his last position was assistant general counsel and director of state government relations. He has also worked as a government affairs representative for the National Stone Association and a legislative analyst at LEGI-SLATE of Congress.

While in high school, Mr. Doss served as a United States Senate Page. He was present daily on the Senate floor and monitored all legislative activity. He was one of two pages selected to deliver the 1972 Presidential Electoral Ballots to the House of Representatives to be counted.

Mr. Doss has a B.A. in government from the College of William and Mary and a J.D. from George Mason University School of Law. He has completed an executive management course at the Center for Creative Leadership. Mr. Doss is a member of the bar in Virginia and the District of Columbia. He serves on the board of directors at the International Council of Bottled Water Associations and is a member of the Food and Drug Law Institute and the American Bar Association.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is sponsored by WaterExpo of China. Mr. Doss’s award presentation will occur Saturday, February 23, at the conference center of the Country Inn of Berkeley Springs, 110 S. Washington St., Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.

The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) is the authoritative source of information about all types of bottled waters, including spring, mineral, purified, artesian, and sparkling. Founded in 1958, IBWA’s membership includes U.S. and international bottlers, distributors and suppliers. IBWA is committed to working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates bottled water as a packaged food product, to set comprehensive and stringent standards for safe, high-quality bottled water products.

In addition to FDA regulations, IBWA member bottlers must adhere to the IBWA Bottled Water Code of Practice, which mandates additional standards and practices that in some cases are more stringent than federal and state regulations. A key feature of the IBWA Bottled Water Code of Practice is a mandatory annual plant inspection by an independent, third-party organization.

IBWA is proud to be a partner with Keep America Beautiful and a supporter of Drink Up, an initiative of former First Lady Michelle Obama and the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), which encourages Americans to drink more water more often – whether from the tap, a filter, or in a bottle. Choosing water is always the healthy choice.
